Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the base nuances of play with ease.
