Hiding Tells
Do you ever get that itch? The itch to gamble, to head to the nearest gambling house, to find a good stakes casino game of Hold em, to sit at a Black jack table for hours on end. I really like that itch. And I like to scratch it.
I also love to watch people gamble. No two poker faces seem identical. When I gamble I like to assume I put on a poker face that is impenetrable. Except I know I’ve specific mannerisms. For 1, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I wager on poker or Black jack. And then I chain smoke. But I smoke whether I am succeeding or losing, whether or not I’ve a excellent hand or bad.
I once bet within a weekly poker game. The game was constantly 5 card draw. There was a player who bet with us just about every week who generally wore a hat. When he was given a very good hand, unconsciously, he would begin touching and betting with his hat. Pointless to say, he in no way won.
The very best poker player I ever saw was a person who produced far more movements and gestures at a poker table than anyone I had ever met. He was flawless in the way he dressed. Usually an expensive suit and tie, footwear shined and nails trimmed. He was fastidious in this manner. And he was usually brushing his pants or holding his hands or putting his chips in tidy little piles.
I use to study him for hours. I would tried to see if I could notice his tell. Selecting fuzz off his shirt- did this mean he was bluffing? Stacking his chips within a short pile – did this mean he had a excellent hand?
Many years later I bumped into him in a very bar in Vegas and we had a drink. I asked him if he have been aware of all those motions he made or if they were unconscious. He informed me that each and every little thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is usually checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are attempting to notice the the tell.
So his method was to provide them lots to consider about. His reasoning was if they were thinking about him choosing a piece of lint off his jacket and what it meant they sure weren’t pondering about their cards.
His technique was distraction. And it worked for him. By no means give up a method that operates for you.
